Before Katyn, another genocide of the Poles took place. This purge of Poles is practically unknown in history. The largest was the ‘Polish Operation’, Starting in 1937 and ending in 1938, NKVD units targeted 140,000 people, 111,091 of whom were executed.

Between 1937 and 1938, Yezhov's order no. 00485 targeted 140,000 Poles in the USSR, killing 111,091 of them in the Polish Operation of the NKVD. 2 July 1937 in Moscow, secretary of the District Land Authority Ryszard Biernacki, 33, was convicted and executed as terrorist.
