March 6, 1937: Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, the first woman to have flown in space, was born in Bolshoye Maslennikovo, Russia. She orbited the Earth forty-eight times, spent almost three days in space, and remains the only woman to have been on a solo space mission.
