Unrug came from a polish-Prussian offcer family. After seving in the German Navy during World War I, he resigned and joined the Polish Army before being transferred to the Polish Navy. He was promoted to capitan (pol. komandor) in 1924 and then commander-in-chief to the Polish Navy from the outbreak od World War II. He was thus in charge during the Battle of Danzig Bay and responsible for the decision to capitulate on 1st October 1939 when Polish forces were overpowered by the Germans. Unrug spent the rest of World War II in POW camps. November 1940 until March 1942, he was improsoned at Colditz , where he was one of the highest-ranking officers.
When the German military tried to persuade Józef Unrug to changes sides, he refusec to cooperate or even speak German. Explaining that he forgotten his German in september 1939, he insisted on having an interpreter present during all negotiations with the Germans. Józef Unrug spent his twilight years in Lailly-En-Val, in France and died there 1973 in home Polish veterans. In 2018, his ashes were returned to Poland
