In September 1939, Poland was invaded and occupied by two totalitarian regimes - Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
On 28 September 1939, the two occupiers signed the German-Soviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty, effectively agreeing on the division of Polish territory. This date is therefore remembered as the "Fourth Partition of Poland".
Poland would have to endure nearly 50 years of occupation and communist rule before finally regaining its full independence in 1989.
